Irish Chamber Orchestra – Bach on the Road

JS Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos are among the most perfect examples of the Baroque concerto. Few works match their tireless invention, colourful instrumentation, or virtuosity. CPE Bach’s popular Cello Concerto in A is a real gem. It offers cellist Christian Elliott plenty of clever challenges in the fast movements, while providing a slow movement of astonishing expressive intensity that transcends time, place, and stylistic formality. His Symphony in B minor is extremely Mozartian in style, full of unexpected harmonic turns. Vivaldi’s Concerto for 2 celli is a stand- alone work performed by ICO cellists Christian Elliott and Aoife NicAthlaoich. Its electrifying opening leaves one in no doubt of its highly charged emotional content. The slow movement breathes an almost autobiographical sadness, while its frenetic finale will have you on the edge of your seat. From the soaring pomp of Bach to the rhythmic elegance of the orchestral suite from Purcell’s Fairy Queen, the sound of the Baroque court provides a rich drawing board for this concert.

The Arrival of Mr Handel in Ireland

Led by acclaimed Irish bassoonist, harpsichordist and conductor Peter Whelan, Ensemble Marsyas – the dynamic international ensemble whose Handel programme was rapturously received in 2013 – returns to the Festival for a three-concert residency that tells the remarkable story of Handel’s stay in Ireland.

In this first concert the ensemble explores the rich musical milieu into which Handel was thrown. Drawing on first-hand accounts of Handel’s stay and featuring works by great 18th-century composers including Purcell, Corelli and Vivaldi, together with modern-day premieres of works by the leading Irish-based composers of the day, The Arrival of Mr Handel sets the composer’s music in a distinctively Irish context.

Georgian Concert Society, La Serenissima, Vivaldi

This performance of Vivaldi’s popular masterpiece uses a new edition made from parts which are in the hand of the composer’s father, Giovanni Battista; this source, housed in the Henry Watson Library, Manchester, represents the only surviving manuscript version of these pieces. Peter Whelan will perform Vivaldi bassoon concertos and La Serenissima also presents two of Vivaldi’s concertos for ‘prepared violin’, the violin in tromba marina. Adrian Chandler, luthier David Rattray and Vivaldi expert Michael Talbot have teamed up to recreate this curious and loud eighteenth century instrument!

La Serenissima: The Four Seasons

A true renaissance man, Vivaldi was at the forefront of innovation, a fact exemplified by works for ‘prepared violin’, the violin in tromba marina – a groundbreaking reconstruction project by Adrian Chandler, luthier David Rattray and scholar Michael Talbot.
